Brahmagiri : Nashik

The Origin Of Godavari River

BrahmagiriBrahmagiri is a mountain adjacent to Trimbakeshwar, some 36km from Nashik. It is the source from where the sacred river Godavari originates. The mountain is believed to be the form of Lord Shiva and hence climbing it was considered as a sin. But in the year 1908 Seth Bhambhani of Karachi and Seth Ganeshdas built 500 stone steps at a cost of Rs. 40,000 then, thus making it more accessible.

The holy river Godavari flows in three directions from the mountain – Godavari (east flowing), Vaitarna (south flowing), Chakra Tirth (west flowing). On top of the Brahmagiri mountain one can see the temples of Godavari and Shiv. As per mythology Gautam Muni lived on the Brahmagiri hill with his wife Ahilya. But he happened to kill a cow with a bunch of grass while trying to ward it off. In order to wash of his sins he prayed Lord Shiva to bring the Ganga down. Pleased with devotion, Shiva requested Ganga to flow down in the form of Godavari and make Sage Gautam pure. And then Lord Shiva ordered her to stay on the Brahmagiri eternally for the good of everyone.
