- Vasant Shankar Kanetkar was a playwright who contributed his share for the Marathi language.
- He was born on March 20, 1920 in the town of Rahimatpur in Satara District.
- He was the son of the famous poet S. K. Kanetkar who wrote under the pen name Kavi Girish and was a professor at the Willington College of Sangli.
- Vasant Kanetkar studied master’s degree in Arts from Willington College and later joined H.P.T. College in Nashik as a professor.
- Some time in the 1970s he resigned from his post and concentrated fully on his play writing.
- He published three novels and wrote about 40 three-act plays.
- Some of his most admired plays are : Vedyacheghar unhat, Raigadala jenvha jagyete, Prema tujha rang kasa?, Matsyagandha, Lekure udandjali, Himalayachi sawali.
- Kanetkar’s plays mainly showed the issues and thoughts of the middle class.
- He bagged a Filmfare Award for Best Story in 1966 for the film “Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool”, that was adapted from his play “Ashroonchi Zaali Phule”.
- He was also awarded the prestigious Padma Shri.
- Kanetkar was elected president of the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in 1988 as well.
- The legend passed away on January 31, 2000.
